They had been casual acquantainces for years, passing in and out of each others' lives with little impact. It was as it had always been with people who grew up and grew apart- you know each other, but you never really "know" each other.
One July morning, they boarded the same flight. She was heading off on vacation. Her head, and heart, were weary with the mundane details of everyday life. She was looking for something else- anything else- to make her feel alive again. She wasn't clear on what that "anything" was.... because isn't it always like that when your life changes??? You know you want something- you can't describe it- but you know it when you see it. So, that's where she was- not seeing it, but hoping.
He was travelling on business. His life was all about TIME. The thing is, he had no time- made no time- and lived his life as though he were running out of time. For him, there were priorities, and goals, and objectives, and lists. He was gonna do big things- and soon. All he was interested in was getting "there". That day, "there" was a business meeting with clients who had the potential to change his business from fledgling to thriving. He was buzzing with excitement and fear. Over and over he checked his blackberry, and iphone, and briefcase. He would never have noticed her if it wasn't for the mandatory screening that made him have to put all his gadgets into a tray, and bend down to slip off his loafers.
From the bottom of the inspection desk, he cast his eyes upward. It was more of an annoying habit he'd developed ever since a traveller stole his blackberry and laptop from a tray at JFK. He would put his shoes on, say "frigging TSA" under his breath- and scan the area for people getting too close to his stuff.
She was sitting with her back turned, her hair in a braid. It was an instant flashback for him. It took him back 20 years, to the days he would stare at her while she sat on the wall of the Catholic school waiting on her father to pick her up. She always wore her hair in a braid, and would lean her head to one side and stare down Independence Avenue to see when her father would drive up. They sat next to each other for a year- every week- on a crumbling wall facing a sports stadium. In that moment he also realized he'd forgotten what that stadium was called. He'd moved from Antigua over 15 years before and was foggy on lots of details. In the week since he'd been home, he had actually gotten lost twice! On an island the size of a hairpin!! He remembered the day before saying how he couldn't remember shit about the place, and could not believe how much things had changed. He had forgotten lots of things.
But not her.
He walked through the X-RAY machine and grabbed his bag. It took him about twenty steps and ten seconds to reach her. He tapped her on the shoulder and said "Toya Turner?"
(this story is a work in process... but I wanted to put something out... because sometimes I get lazy)
