I just love how these pants go from basic to bad-ass with texture. Snakeskin is so sexy.... you gotta have the cojones to wear this look though.
I wore this pant with a nude vest, and nothing else. I'm a tall girl; one statement piece per outfit is all I need. I've been spending lots of time in bed- because I was unwell, and I started reading books from my bookshelf that hadn't seen the light of day in years. I love the smell of the pages- a kindle really doesn't come close!
This book: And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie, is a timeless classic in the genre of murder mysteries (is there such a thing?). I have had this book since I was a little girl, and no matter how many times I read it, I feel like I'm seeing something for the first time. I'm trying to learn about character development, and books like these ones highlight how important the little details are when you are fleshing out a plot.
As many of you ladies (and gents) may know, the first #Afrofunky pop up boutique takes place at The Little Starfish this Thursday. What many of you may not know is just how much this movement means to us. While Amina and I appreciate the outpouring of well wishes and interest in seeing the pieces, we are moved to bring these products to you in an effort to make a larger statement ; it is important to spend your money wisely.
It is easy to go online and make a purchase from a department store, or walk in St. Johns and grab something from the rack.
It is harder to make your money make a difference.
This pop-up shop allows you to make a direct connection with the individual who made the item you wear- be it the YOURUBATIK earrings- which support AZIZI LIFE, an initiative which supports the Rwandan women, or CHICHIA's Chuki Ya Nini Sila Cha Mtu Tee (which I already snagged - outfit post coming soon) which is a collaboration between the designer and concept jersey label MADE BY AFRICA, there are lots of beautiful things which make a difference. In fact, 1 USD from every garment sold through that project will go towards supporting education for the SOS Children's Village in Tanzania.
This video by another featured designer, MAKSI, is a promotional video for their work with Energy Solutions Foundation, an NGO, working to build a bio gas plant in Wa, Ghana. MAKSI is encouraging all Ghanians to get serious about their environment, and adDRESS the issue.
Your support of the pop-up boutique will help these and more projects succeed.
So, I'm encouraging you to "look good, and do good".
I love a theme. Last Christmas I was in the planning stages for my shop, so I was very into all things seaside. If you've been a follower of the blog you will remember the "starfish and seashells" theme I did for the entryway and garlands as well as the "glitter incident of 2010" which gave me a beautiful tree and a scratched cornea. (All's well that ends in glitter) LOL
This year I am going with the "Afro-centric" theme from the pop-up boutique. I think this is my most inspired tree yet. I hope you guys love it as much as I loved doing it. Stop by the shop and have a look.... these pictures do not do it justice!
okay...can you guys see all the jungle animals??? LOVE THEM!!!!!
Zee Wise old owl
Christmas is my favourite time of year... all that food!! and everything else that comes with it. LOL.
Vacay nails - Afro-funky freehand by Susan at Shangri-la 463-3303.
Normally I try to stick with a french manicure and glitter.... but I'm running with my "freedom" and doing something fun. Remember I did IKAT print nails before? These nails are inspired by African fabric, and I think it worked out great.
... because I'm really bad at keeping a secret (and I feel like I know you guys) HAHA.... Here's a sneak peek at a video shoot this weekend. There is a fantastic new song coming out from Them Island Boyz- Drastic and BV, featuring Jah Cure. It was an incredible collaboration, and I was happy to be a part of it. As you can see from the pic above, I styled the models in TEA Tunics, so it was a win-win.
I will definitely post the video as soon as it comes out. The models for the shoot were Island Style favourite, Xiea Hull, and newcomers Camille and "Tropical Barbie". Pretty as sin!
This is my "up since 6, no foundation, working in hot sun , and completely exhausted face"... and that's Xiea..."let's take a picture, Toya, face"... did I mention she's 18 ? I needed a glass of wine. HAHA.
so I wore all comfy clothes- my work jeans from H&M, oversized neon pink shirt, Zara, Ralph Lauren belt, Steve Madden shoes.... they are sequinned! Luv em.
Guy at Nightclub: You look like a clown in that stupid jacket.
Sailor: This is a snakeskin jacket! And for me it's a symbol of my individuality, and my belief... in personal freedom.
Guy at Nightclub: Asshole.
This is one of the memorable quotes from the David Lynch movie starring Nicholas Cage... who is one of my favourite actors.... and this is what I wore: Sunday night: Independence Fashion Show 2011
